WHY WATER?

On the global water shortage issue

More than 2 billion people live in water-scarce countries. In some regions, the difficulties caused by water scarcity are expected to be exacerbated due to climate change and population growth.

Even at this moment, 771 million people around the world are living without clean water.

Across the globe, at least 200 million people are using fecal-contaminated water for drinking. This poses a significant risk to safe access to drinking water.

Nearly one in ten people in the world drink contaminated water, which leads to the death of 4,100 children every day from waterborne diseases. This is higher than the death rate from all forms of violence, including war.

Clean water saves lives.

With clean water and basic sanitation, the lives of 297,000 children under the age of 5 could be saved each year.

The total time spent fetching and carrying water is 40 billion hours per year in Africa alone. With clean water, people have more time to grow food, do business, and go to school.

A staggering number of children in Africa, especially girls, are out of school because of the labor they are engaged in. Watering villages and schools will give those children time to go to school, as well as increase female attendance at schools.

WHY WASH?

Importance of providing clean water and sanitation

Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, and polio. The lack of clean water and sanitation can be a serious health hazard regarding diseases that are otherwise preventable.

Every year, approximately 829,000 people die of diarrhea due to unsafe drinking water and the lack of basic sanitary conditions for hand washing and disinfectants.

Clean water and basic sanitation can prevent diarrhea and save the lives of 297,000 children under the age of 5 each year.

WHY AFRICA?

Africa’s sanitary conditions of drinking water

Achieving Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – water and sanitation – requires more dramatic support from the outside world than today.

  • Only 39% of the African population has access to safe drinking water, while 27% has access to safe sanitation.
  • Three in four Africans in rural areas do not have access to clean water and sanitation.
  • About 411 million Africans use dirty and polluted drinking water.
  • In order to achieve the SDG goal by 2030, the international community’s efforts are needed to support 12 times more drinking water and 20 times more sanitation than the present.
